Frequently Asked Questions

What are Damon brackets?

Dr. Dwight Damon has refined this approach to orthodontic brackets (braces) over the past twenty years so the concept is not new. Simply put, THIS IS A SYSTEM OF BRACES WITH A DOOR MECHANISM BUILT IN WHICH HOLDS THE WIRES IN A VERY UNIQUE WAY, THUS ALLOWING THE LATEST ARCHWIRE TECHNOLOGY POTENTIAL (COPPER/NICKEL/TITANIUM THERMALLY ACTIVATED ARCHWIRES) TO BE FULLY REALIZED. WE HAVE USED THE DAMON SYSTEM ON HUNDREDS OF PATIENTS SINCE 2004 AND HAVE SEEN THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF TREATMENT VISITS DECREASE BY 30%!! THESE BRACKETS USE LIGHTER FORCES RESULTING IN GREATER COMFORT, FEWER EXTRACTIONS OF PERMANENT TEETH AND TYPICALLY SHORTER OVERALL TREATMENT TIME THAN OUR TREATMENT APPROACH OF ONLY 5-10 YEARS AGO.

How are Retainers worn?

Rule #1-Wear retainers 8-10 hours each and every night while sleeping.  If they are not in your mouth after sleeping, wear 8-10 hours during the day instead of night-time wear.

Rule #2-If there is any change in the fit of the retainers or the alignment of the teeth, call our office immediately for an appointment.

All patients must determine exactly how many hours they must wear retainers daily to prevent any tooth movement.

To repeat, all patients must determine exactly how many hours they must wear retainers daily to prevent any tooth movement.

These clear retainers fit the teeth precisely and completely prevent movement if they are worn enough hours EACH day.  If worn properly, the retention of this type of retainer is always successful.  To ensure no relapse, retainers should be worn indefinitely.  Studies have shown these retainers keep teeth aligned better than other type retainers.

The retianer must be worn some portion of EVERY day and must be FULLY seated.  They are NOT designed to be worn 24/7 unless specifically instructed by Dr. Brantley.  Dogs (and sometimes cats) will eat through retainer cases to chew on retainers-KEEP OUT OF REACH OF ALL PETS.

What to look for:  (as long as you want to keep your teeth straight)

     a)  Do the retainers fully seat every time? -If not, call our office immediately.

     b)  Do my teeth look and feel exactly the same? -If not, call our office immediately.

     c)  Do my teeth feel sore after placing or removing my retainers? -If so, call our office immediately.

     d)  Do the retainers feel excessively tight when seated? -If so, call our office immediately.

     e)  If you have a bonded (wire) retainer, it can loosen or have leakage around the edges.  This can contribute to cavities or gum disease-HAVE THESE RETAINERS CLEANED AND EXAMINED BY YOUR DENTIST AT LEAST TWICE YEARLY.

If you allow your teeth to move you may:

   1)  Leave the teeth the way they are and do nothing.

   2)  Make new retainers to hold the teeth as they are -current fee is $37.50 for one retainer, $75.00 for two.

   3)  Place braces again to re-align the teeth -fee is $300 each for upper or lower plus $90 per month until the teeth are re-aligned -this fee includes new retainers.

Relapse is completely preventable if the above instructions are adhered to -also, fees quoted are subject to change in the future.

We will schedule an appointment to check you retainer 3 months from the day of removal and then every 6 months for one year as needed.  If you fail a retianer check appointment, it will be your responsiblility to call our office to reschedule.  We will not contact you.
